Hug Somebody You Love

November 5th, 2008 · 11 Comments

As I was driving to work this morning I was thinking about what to blog tonight.  I thought about how I should tell you that I didn’t get to blog this week’s Money Saving Monday because my internet was down.  I thought about telling you all how proud I was of John for voting for the first time ever(!!!).  And I thought about how I would browse for homeless doggies to post about on my lunch break.  And then I saw this hurling towards me.

Well ok, not EXACTLY that but I don’t have a picture of the van that hit me pre-impact.  It was one of those events that seems to play itself out in slow motion.  I was sitting in traffic on the way to work – for the locals on Bell Road - the light up ahead had just changed and we were beginning to lurch forward when I saw a red van coming up the road traveling in the opposite direction as traffic.  I noticed it was starting to veer towards the turning lane that separates the 4 lanes of traffic and by the time I realized it wasn’t stopping at the turning lane it had made contact with my car.  I was like a sitting duck in that traffic.  I couldn’t have moved if I had known it wasn’t going to stop.  As the van careened into me it spun me around into the oncoming traffic and vaulted me up onto the sidewalk on the other side of the road.  I am so very thankful that none of the oncoming traffic hit me.  I still think I’m a little bit in shock about the whole thing.  My side curtain air bags deployed and I ended up with a nasty “contusion” as the ER doctor called it, but nothing is broken and I was able to get out of my car by crawling out the passenger side door.  The lady that hit me as well as the lady who was behind me weren’t so lucky.  They both had to be cut out of their cars.

Here are some pictures John and I took of my car at the tow lot this afternoon.  I have to say the Murano held up really well to being hit by a mini-van traveling around 50mph (and never hitting their breaks!!).

And this is the one that gets me.  This one shows how the van swiped my mirror and just lightly scraped the door where I was sitting.  If the impact had been just slightly different I might not be writing this tonight.  So please, go and hug someone you love tonight because you just never know what might happen on the way to work tomorrow.

Amber – your guardian angel was watching out for you. Horrific accident, yet it could have been worse. Major HUGS for you.

And yeah – we’re proud of John for *finally* voting.
