Money Saving Monday – Flowers

February 23rd, 2009 · No Comments

Happy Monday everyone!  I’ve had kind of a rough one myself.  While at work this afternoon this news article made the e-mail rounds.  Kinda scary for me.  As much as I would like to be a full time photographer, I’m not quite ready to give up my day job.  We’ll see what happens, but for now it’s just another reminder that times are tough, making money saving Monday all the more relevant.

Tonight I want to talk a little bit about how you can save money on flowers for your wedding.

-Use flowers that are in season.  This will vary depending on what part of the country you live in but to get a general idea of what is in season you can check out TheFlowerExpert.com

-Go simple.  Sometimes just a few flowers can make a big statement as in K’s bouquet created by Granny’s Flower Shop.

-Avoid getting married on a holiday that involves flower buying like Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day.

-Shop around.  Prices for floral arrangements can vary widely from florist to florist.  It is worth your time to not only get several different quotes, but also to consult places like the local knot board or Ashley’s Bride Guide to get recommendations from other brides.

-Create your own arrangements.  Our Bride Allison had her grandmother create all the arrangements made in her wedding, including her lovely bouquet.

I would however like to add the disclaimer that I don’t endorse this route unless you have prior experience with flower arranging and/or don’t mind some added stress on your wedding day.  I personally was all about minimizing my stress level.

-Consider alternatives to flowers.  This article describes some alternatives to using a flower bouquet.  One friend of my mother’s chose to use feathers instead of flowers to not only cut costs, but to make her wedding even more uniquely hers.

Alright that’s all I’ve got for tonight.  Check back tomorrow – I’ll be posting a really unique session I had last week :)
