This morning I crossed another goal for this year off my list by running my second 5k of the year. I love when I can run a race and support something I believe in at the same time and that was certainly the case today. This morning’s race was a fundraiser for Girls on the Run. Here is a little bit about the organization care of their facebook fanclub page:
Girls on the Run® (GOTR) Nashville and Girls on Track® (GOT) Nashville are 12-week after school programs for 3rd through 6th grade girls. The program uses the power of running to help prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Through interactive activities such as playing games, running, discussing health, wellness and other important issues, participants learn how to celebrate being girls. The girls are empowered with a greater self-awareness, a sense of achievement and a foundation in team building to help them become strong, confident, well-balanced young women.
Each session is led by trained female coaches who guide and mentor girls through a fun and uplifting curriculum. Coaches teach specific life lessons such as dealing with body image and the media, resisting peer pressure, making healthy decisions and contributing to the community. Along the way, the girls train for a 5k (3.1 mile) run/walk event in which they participate as a group. Anecdotal evidence indicates an improved sense of identity, self-esteem, body image, eating attitudes and an increasingly active lifestyle.
So basically this awesome group is helping to increase the health and self esteem of tweens in our community – YAY! Unfortunately the weather was not on our side today and I got soaked to the bone during the run, but I was able to snap a few pics before the race started to share with you
Also on the way back to my car I was approached about running another race – Ellie’s Run for Africa. We are shooting a wedding that day so I won’t be able to participate, but if you are free that day you should sign up. It looks like it will be a wonderful event!
